When you choose Newcastle Pest Control, you’ll get the most up to date pest control technology backed with a ‘12 month guarantee’… note rodents only come with a 6 months guarantee. If the pests come back so do we at no cost to you!
Mice & Rats breed every 6 weeks… If you have ANY signs of Mice or Rats you need to act now or risk damage to your property or health!
Rodents are destructive pests that can spread disease, contaminate food and destroy property.
You will need to decide on baits (cheapest), sticky traps, normal traps or the ‘humane trap’ listed at the bottom of the page.
How can I help prevent a rodent infestation?
- Store food in secure containers.
- Wash dishes immediately after use.
- Seal all unintentional holes, gaps and cracks larger than 5 mm.
- Install weather strips at the bottom of exterior doors.
- Remove any piles of debris.
- Trim branches, plants and bushes that hang near the building.
- Ensure that gutters are directing water away from the building.
- Commercial bait stations
What do I do if I suspect a rodent problem?
Because of the health concerns related to rodents, anyone suspecting a problem should contact a licensed pest management professional. Newcastle Pest Control professionals can help identify and eliminate rodent problems.
To control mice & rats, you must “think like them,” keeping in mind the behavioural traits noted above. The best way to control rodents is to prevent their entry. Mice are able to squeeze through extremely small openings narrower than the diameter of a 10 cent piece therefore cracks in the foundation should be sealed, as should gaps and openings under doors and where utility pipes enter the structure. Rats are good climbers and will often enter via the roof space where openings and ventilation occur.
Good sanitation and food storage practices are helpful in reducing problems with rodents. Since seeds are a preferred food, all vegetable gardens adjacent to the building should likewise be eliminated. However, because mice are able to occupy such small nesting areas and survive on minute amounts of food, sanitation alone will not normally eliminate an existing infestation.
Control Rodents Using Sticky Traps/Pads
Sticky traps/pads are used by many pest companies. We do not use them as we feel that they are an unpleasant form of control for the rodent. (we are not going to go into the details).
Control Using Rodenticides
Nearly all baits are formulated exclusively as food-based baits containing seeds or grain as an attractant. Most rodenticides are anticoagulants containing Brodifacoum, Bromadiolone Chlorophacinone, Diphacinone or Warfarin as active ingredients.
They kill by interfering with normal clotting of the rodents’ blood, causing the animal to die from internal bleeding. Since mice forage only short distances from their nests, optimum results are achieved with multiple bait placements as close to the mouse harbourage as possible.
We take extreme care when positioning baits in areas inaccessible to children or pets. Dogs, in particular, will seek out and find baits placed in areas which are accessible. This is why we will nearly always place the baits securely in the roof void when possible. In the event your home does not have a roof space we place the baits in areas that are not accessible to children or pets. When this is not possible we place them in tamper proof containers which are only accessible by the rodents.
The rodents will nibble on the bait and will then feel a desperate need for water. The rodents will generally leave the house immediately. This of course goes a long way to reducing the chance of them dying in the home and thus giving off that unpleasant odour. This often happens when supermarket brand baits are used due to the low amount of poison in the bait and the way it is presented to the rodent.
Transfer Of Rodent Poison To Pets
There is a lot of conjecture about this topic. Some people will tell you that if your dog ate a mouse or rat that had eaten the poison the dog would die also. Based on the manufacturer’s comments and our own results obtained from clients when this has happened has shown no support for this. In fact we have had a situation when a dog had actually eaten the poison directly after an owner had moved one of our baits where a dog got access. The end result was nothing as the dog was fine. As this was eating the bait directly as opposed to eating the poisoned mouse or rat you would have to draw the conclusion that the poison was not sufficient to hurt the dog. (This obviously depends on the dogs’ size, weight and amount of poison consumed. The dog in question was about 25kg and ate two whole blocks).
We have attempted to inform you honestly about these baits as they are the only treatment that we do that is considered a health risk to children and pets. We take every precaution when placing these baits in your home and will always spend the time to explain the ups and downs of this type of treatment as your family always comes first.
The Revolutionary Automatic Humane Rat and Mouse Trap.
The TRAP is a multi-kill system that reliably and effectively provides instant, humane kill of the pest rodents.
The TRAP is powered by compressed gas from a small, recyclable canister. This powers and resets the trap multiple times before needing replacement.
The TRAP works by striking the skull of the rodent with a glass reinforced polymer piston, killing the pest instantly. This is important since it ensures other rodents are not deterred from investigating the TRAP and therefore being killed themselves.
In fact field trials have proven that the TRAP can kill several rodents in the one night, with rodents climbing over the bodies of their dead comrades to get to the lure.
Designed for Nature – Perfect for Urban Environments
Revolutionary research has designed the trap for long term outdoor use with no possibility of secondary poisoning.
The design behind the trap arises from the management of rats in large scale Wilderness Conservation Programs. Thus it has minimal requirements for servicing, maximum reliability and simplicity, and repeated successful killing of rats and mice.
There are no toxic bait components in the trap which makes it the perfect solution for all your rodent management needs. The risks of secondary toxicity from poison rodent baits to predatory birds, mammals and our pets are well documented. This risk is simply eliminated with the use of the trap. In addition it is a multi-kill trap, capable of killing numerous rodents, more quickly and efficiently than baits.
How It Works
The trap reliably and humanely kills the rodent, and then automatically resets itself, ready for the next invader.
The TRAP is powered by a Gold-standard CO2 Canister, within which the pressure ranges from 1,500 – 13,000 kPa, depending upon the ambient temperature. When the Canister is attached, the gas passes through a Regulator which restricts the pressure released into the TRAP to about 500 kPa.
Inside the TRAP the precision designed internal pressure reservoirs are equilibrated at 500 kPa. The pressure behind the Piston Diaphragm forces it shut, closing off the Piston Bore.
The Natural Rodent Lure is mounted above the Shroud Chamber. The lure draws the rodents in to investigate. When the rodent’s head is positioned correctly in the Shroud Chamber, it brushes aside the sensitive trigger (set at a pressure of just 20 g).
This opens the Vent Valve, venting the gas from the Vent Reservoir and from behind the Piston Diaphragm to atmospheric. The higher pressure in the Piston Reservoir then explodes out into the Piston Bore, driving the glass reinforced polymer Piston out into the Shroud Chamber, with a force of 30 Kg, instantly killing the rat or mouse. The Piston holds in place for 0.25 seconds before releasing the rodent.
Now that the internal pressure has been released, the CO2Canister releases more CO2, and the Piston Diaphragm once more closes off the Piston Bore. A small spring draws the Piston back into the firing position.
The TRAP is now armed and ready to kill the next pest rodent.

Humane Kill – The TRAP provides instant kill to the target species and has undertaken independent humane evaluation to deliver on the NZ MAF National Animal Welfare Advisory Guidelines (NAWAC) and it meets the Class A Standard (highest Standard).
Placement – In wildlife conservation programs and agricultural situations, placement in a 50 m x 100 m grid is recommended, following the contours of the land. For use in the urban environment placement at 10 m intervals for mice and 20 m – 30 m for rats is recommended, with placement in areas where non-target species are less likely to gain access.
